# apt-get install mariadb-server mariadb-client I thought the easiest solution would be to reinstall MariaDB: # apt-get purge mysql-server mysql-client mysql-common mysql-server-core-5.5 mysql-client-core-5.5 After installing a LAMP stack on Debian Stretch I encountered all sorts of issues with MySQL / MariaDB (couldn't log in as root from my normal user and then root had no privileges).
